While portraying a treasure hunter in a popcorn pic like “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull”, Harrison Ford may not catch up with the Oscar gold that’s eluded him so far throughout his career, but his next two movie roles may be more in line with the academy’s taste.

And academy voters may well think it time to reward this 65-year-old movie icon, who lost his only Oscar bid — for “Witness” to William Hurt (”The Kiss of the Spider Woman”).

When moviegoers settle in to watch the new Indiana Jones movie in theaters, they may first see an unexpected message from its star, Harrison Ford.

Before Indiana Jones tries to save the artifacts in the movie, Ford will tell the audience to save the animals.

“Our endangered animals are being destroyed by illegal wildlife trade. It’s up to us to stop it. Never buy illegal wildlife products. When the buying stops, the killing can too,” the actor says in one of three public service announcements taped for an international campaign to curb illegal animal trafficking.

NEW YORK (AP) Harrison Ford has pulled a Steve Carell for a public service announcement: He got his chest waxed.

The 65-year-old star winces in apparent pain as a strip of hair is yanked from his chest in the announcement for Conservation International to raise awareness about the effect of deforestation on global warming.

The actor, who doesn’t typically appear in such TV spots, sits on the board of directors of the Washington-based environmental organization.

Conservation International CEO Peter Seligmann said Ford was game to do the 30-second spot, and approved of the waxing concept.

“I didn’t have to talk him into anything,” Seligmann said at a news conference Tuesday in Manhattan. “I was there when he filmed it. It really hurt. There’s nothing about the expression on his face that was fake.”

The classic scene from 2005’s “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” — in which Carell screams out “Kelly Clarkson!” during his chest hair removal — was intentionally hilarious. Ford’s message, however, is serious: “Every bit of rain forest that gets ripped out over there, really hurts us over here.”
